Inside the Global Express: A Luxury Private Jet Journey Across Africa
Welcome to sunny South Africa. Today’s adventure is a true jackpot ride inside the legendary Global Express. From powerful takeoffs to luxury dining at 45,000 feet, this journey showcases what ultra-long-range private aviation is all about.
Departure from South Africa: Power and Performance
We were welcomed onboard by Captain Marco and First Officer Peter. The flight plan included departure in a northerly direction before setting course eastbound, climbing initially to 37,000 feet.
The takeoff was incredibly powerful. The Rolls-Royce engines produce approximately 14,750 pounds of thrust each at sea level, delivering a forceful acceleration that literally pushes you back into your seat. This aircraft can cruise comfortably at Mach 0.83 and climb directly to 41,000 feet without step climbs — something most commercial jets cannot do.
The Global Express has a range of approximately 5,200 to 5,400 nautical miles, meaning routes like Johannesburg to London are possible nonstop.
Onboard Luxury: Dining, Comfort, and Cabin Experience
Even on a short 40-minute flight, the crew managed to serve hot tea with milk, croissants, butter, jam, and fresh flowers. The galley operates like a flying private kitchen, with catering carefully planned based on passenger requirements and budgets.
On longer sectors, the experience elevated further. A mushroom soup starter followed by butter chicken curry was served at 45,000 feet while overlooking Lake Malawi. Freshly prepared meals — including eggs made from scratch — demonstrated the difference between VIP private aviation and commercial service.
The aircraft also features:
- Fully reclining seats converting into flat beds
- A private bedroom suite
- En-suite lavatory
- Premium catering prepared onboard
At cruising altitudes of up to 51,000 feet maximum ceiling, passengers enjoy smoother air above commercial traffic, faster routing, and fewer restrictions.
Flight Across Africa: Mozambique to Nairobi
Our route from Mozambique to Nairobi covered multiple airspaces including Malawi, Tanzania, and Kenya. The aircraft climbed straight to 41,000 feet, demonstrating its impressive high-weight performance.
During cruise, we witnessed Mount Kilimanjaro standing over 5,800 meters tall — a rare clear view of its summit. Descending into Nairobi involved a rapid 3,000 feet per minute descent, showcasing the jet’s responsive handling.
Technical Insights from the Cockpit
Inside the flight deck, advanced avionics and long-range capability make this aircraft exceptional. The crew explained that the jet typically cruises between 41,000 and 45,000 feet, above commercial airliners, allowing operational advantages such as direct routing and fuel efficiency.
The combination of powerful Rolls-Royce engines and aerodynamic efficiency enables smooth, high-speed intercontinental travel.
Second Leg: Nairobi to Lagos
Day two began with departure to Lagos, Nigeria — a 4 hour and 23-minute flight cruising at Flight Level 400 (40,000 feet) and approximately 460 knots (around 900 km/h).
Crossing Uganda, Central African Republic, Cameroon, and Benin, the journey demonstrated the freedom private aviation provides. Onboard, multiple meal courses were prepared fresh, including chocolate mousse desserts and premium beverages.
Private Aviation Freedom
Flying on a private jet offers unmatched flexibility. Whether enjoying panoramic African views, relaxing in a private bedroom suite, or simply appreciating the performance of an aircraft capable of climbing directly to 41,000 feet at high weights, the experience is about efficiency, privacy, and comfort.
The Global Express will ultimately be based in the UAE and available for global charter operations, combining range, performance, and refined cabin luxury.
Final Thoughts
This journey across Africa highlighted not only the luxury of private aviation but also the incredible engineering behind the Global Express. From powerful departures to serene cruise altitudes far above commercial traffic, it’s an aviation experience few get to enjoy.
Flying faster, higher, and with complete privacy — that’s the essence of the Global Express.
